| Jains believe that the only way to save one's own soul is to protect every other soul, and so the most central Jain teaching, and the heart of Jain ethics, is that of ahimsa (non-violence).
In practical terms the biggest part that ahimsa plays in the lives of lay Jains today is in the regulation of their diet.
Mahavira taught that:
there is no quality of soul more subtle than non-violence and no virtue of spirit greater than reverence for life |

Samvatsari – The day that comes only once a year after much preparations is known as ‘Samvatsari’. This is the day that arrives after the religious period of ‘Samvotsar’. In fact this festival is also called ‘Paryushan’. This period of ‘samvotsar’ comes 50 days after and 70 days before the close of the chaturmas period. Sometimes the ‘samvotsar’ may vary between 49 days after and 71 days before the close of the ‘chaturmas’ or the four month period. |

| Terapanth is a reformist religious sect under Svetambara Jainism. The terapanthi sub-sect was founded by Acharya Bhikshu, also known as Swami Bhikanji Maharaj. Swami Bhikanji was formerly a Sthanakvasi saint and had initiation by Acharya Raghunatha. But he had differences with his Guru on several aspects of religious practices of Sthanakvasi ascetics. | What and Why?
Man has been progressively developing ever since the earliest times. There are three developmental dispositions in him : jigyasa (desire to know, inquire, investigate), Bubhusha (desire to be or become anything), and chikirsha (desire to make or do or perform).
Man has jigyasa. At times he wants to discover new facts.
He has chikirsha. He wants to do something. |

Introduction
Yatra or a journey on foot with a purpose is not new in the nonviolent Jain tradition. Lord Mahavira – the 24th Tirthankar who asserted that all jivas were equal walked all his life to alleviate human misery. The Jain ascetics are supposed to be on the move till they breathe their last. The main aim of their lifelong vow to keep walking till the end of their life is to carry the message of peace and nonviolence far and wide and inspire the masses to live a good life. |

Human beings can be divided into three categories: Those who think about the future, those who think about the present and those who think about the past.
